Costumes and make-up
A theatre-in-the-round needs the services of a highly imaginative and skillful costume designer, for the costume creates a large portion of the atmosphere of the plays. This applies especially to period plays. The costume must be beautifully designed and perfectly executed. it has to be thoroughly authentic as to style, materials and the minutest details because the proximity of the spectators enables them to examine it very closely. faking is absolutely out of the guestion ; it is impossible, for example, to substitute a cheap material when a glistening satin is reguired. in a play calling for richness and a lush quality, like moliere s the learned ladies, the exuberance of the costume is as the performance of the actor. the costume reflects the emotional impact of the play as well as its locale and its time.
